Final Product Unit 3

Production Diary Blog 25.03.2013

In this final week I concentrated on completing my DPS. To do this I went on InDesign. As I said the week before I had already set out my DPS. I added how many columns I wanted, which was 3. I also put margins in and I got these sizes for other magazines. I went back and looked at my photos from the second shoot and decided I would use one of these fore my main image on my DPS, but I also went back and looked at my images from the first shoot and discovered one image that was really good and effective; however I there was no room for it on my DPS, otherwise I would be unable to add text and a break out box. So I came up with the idea of adding another DPS of just this image, headline and kicker. This enabled me to put the image in and also create more room on my most important DPS.

I edited all the photos I wanted to use and created my first DPS with only the headline and kicker, which did not take me very long at all. I then added my chosen main image and added that to my other DPS. I the made my breakout box down the side of my page and added some important statistics that I found while doing my research tasks. I put the important number in bigger text and also in a different colour, this was to stand out and catch the eye of my target audience. I then added my article to the page and included sub-headings to it. This was to break up the article so it didn’t look too much for my reader. I also added a drop cap on the first letter and also a quote insert.

After doing all of this I felt that my DPS was still quite plain. So I decided to add more photos to my DPS to try and make it more appealing and exciting. I went back to my first photoshoot again and found three images that I thought would be effective on the page. I edited these 3 images and added them to the top of the DPS above my article and put a border around them and added a slant.

Too finish my whole product off I went back and double checked everything on my front cover and once I was happy with that added my front cover to the two DPS’ in InDesign. I then exported all of them together and submitted it.

As I stated, last week was a bad week for my front cover and had to rebook another photoshoot. However while waiting for the shoot to come round, I spent my time beginning to layout out my DPS, but the majority of my time was spent on setting up my front cover. I set up a new page with the right measurements, so that when I eventually did the photoshoot everything would be ready for the images to just go on the cover. I also started to add the masthead, skyline and some sell lines. I decided to put them in the colours I would ideally like, but could easily change it match the colours in the photoshoot. This time I went for a much more feminine feel, using colours like pinks, yellows and oranges. I positions everything where I thought they should go and again thought it would be just as easy to move them when the images from the shoot came.

By the day of the photoshoot I had put everything on that thought was needed including, the date, price, and barcode, sell lines, skyline and masthead. I had my second photoshoot, so I spent time getting in touch with my models and told them exactly what I wanted. This time I knew exactly what I wanted for my front cover. I asked my model to wear bright colours and some floral clothing. To ensure that I got the images I needed I got my models to bring in various different outfit so I could get a range of different colours and looks to choose from. I felt that my photoshoot had gone very successfully and was very pleased with the results. Therefore the next lesson I looked through all the images and eliminated the ones I thought would not work on my front cover. I then tried and tested some of my favour images and finally found one that went well and suited what I was looking for. I then changed some of the colours of the sell lines and picked the colours from my models outfit. I also moved things around so that it suited the image. There were also some gaps so I quickly filled them with some small sell lines. I had finally completed my front cover and a level that I was happy with.

I then went on to finish writing my article, as I had not done so. I began to finish my article off to the best level I could. I also had a peer look over my final article to make sure it was smooth reading for my target audience and to check over it for me.

Production Diary Blog 12.03.2013

I began my production of my front cover and DPS. After completing all of my research and flat plans I went onto doing the actual photoshoot. I booked and planned my photoshoot to take place on the 1st March; this was a perfect time as it was quite far in advance from my final deadline. I told my two models what I wanted them to do in the photoshoot and planned what they would wear and look like a week before the shoot, as this gave them time to prepare and myself time to think of new ideas for the shoot instead of thinking on them on the spot and wasting time. During the shoot I learned many different skills including how to take effective photos and to use the lighting effectively to make my photos look as best as they could. When the shoot took place I thought it had gone very successfully and I was pleased with the photos.  As a result of having my main model wear red on a black background, found that I had a very limited colour scheme, when piecing my front cover together. I also felt as my product was beginning to not appeal to my chosen target audience. Originally I wanted the colour scheme to be reds, yellows and blacks to get the connotation of alcohol being poison across; however after seeing that it was not appealing to my target audience, I felt I had to reassess my front cover.
I decided that my best solution was too have another photoshoot, so that I could change the image of my magazine and get it back on track to appealing to my target audience. I went and rebooked my photoshoot, but the closest one to the time I could get was not until the 18th March. In the mean time I worked on my front cover without an image, and began to add my headline, skyline and sell lines.  As soon as I started my new front cover, I automatically felt it was looking better; however as I changed the look of my magazine I changed the magazine that I was basing mine on. I originally wanted it to look like a heat magazine, however now I am basing it on Seventeen magazines. I feel this will appeal to my audience much better.

As a result of changing my ideas and thoughts it has put me behind and therefore have a lot of work to do once I do my photoshoot. However while waiting for my new photoshoot date, I started thinking about my DPS and if I needed to change this in any way to match my new front cover. Although my first photoshoot was not a waste of time as I can use some of them images in my DPS as I did some a white background and not on black.I began setting out my DPS and deciding what other photos I needed from the photoshoot.
